The Maasai Mara game sanctuary is if anything Kenya's most popular game sanctuary. It is the most popular and most patronized game reserve in Kenya.
Nearly all sorts of animals can be viewed at the Mara. The sanctuary abounds with wildlife with about 452 breeds documented here. Hot air balloon safaris are readily available in this sanctuary.
The Masai's who dwell in the Mara and its ecosystem are strongly unique people who still treasure tradition and ritual as a fundamental part of their lives. They regard themselves not just as occupants of this area but that they are equally as much a part of the existence of the land as the land is a part of their existence.
Customarily, the Masai rarely hunt and dwelling together with wildlife in tranquility is an essential part of their belief. Lions and Wildebeest have a major role in their cultural values as their own herds of cattle. This distinctive co-existence of man and wildlife makes this Masai land essentially the world's most unique wilderness regions.
On a yearly basis the Mara hosts the world's ultimate natural show, the Great Wildebeest Migration from across the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rain and fresh life giving grass in the north brings in upwards of 1.3 million Wildebeest together into a single mammoth herd. They spill across the border into the Mara, making an awesome entry in a soaring column of life that stretches from horizon to horizon.
At the Mara River they mass as a group on the banks before eventually plunging forward into the fierce waters, causing frenzy as they wrestle against swift currents and ready crocodiles.
The wildebeest bring new life to the Mara, not just through their cycle of renewal of the grasslands, but also for the predators that follow the herds.
The Masai Mara has been referred to as the Empire of Lions and these noble and proficient hunters rule over these grasslands. Cheetahs are also a common sight in the Mara, as are Hyena and smaller predators such as Jackals.
The Mara is an amazing natural beauty, a place where Masai herdsmen share the plains with hunting lions, an area of great herds and constant cycles of life, death and renewal.
Wildlife moves freely in and out of the reserve and throughout neighboring Masai lands. On the outside of the boundaries of the sanctuary, are many small camping sites and lodges, some of which have walking, horse riding and other safari possibilities.
The Loita Hills and the Nguruman escarpment, both considered holy to the Masai, provide high forest trekking options for the energetic visitor.
